Clean borders frame great leatherwork. In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn how to create geometric border designs while building confidence with foundational stamping techniques, including basic geometric stamp layout.

This course focuses on precision, spacing, alignment, and repetition — the skills that make borders look intentional instead of uneven. You’ll practice creating consistent impressions, laying out patterns with intention, maintaining flow along straight edges and corners, and developing the rhythm that strong tooling requires.

Whether you’re adding borders to belts, wallets, bags, or larger projects like saddles, the techniques in this class will strengthen your control and elevate the overall finish of your work. It’s a focused practice session that pays off across every project you build.

What you Will Learn:

• How to build clean, consistent geometric border patterns
• Basic geometric stamp layout and pattern planning
• Proper spacing, alignment, and layout techniques for stamping
• How to maintain flow through straight runs and corners
• Techniques for consistent depth and clean impressions
• Developing rhythm and control with repetitive stamping

• Swivel knife
• Wing dividers
• Mallet or maul
• Basic stamping tools (your favorite geometric stamps)
• Spray bottle
• Rock
• Notebook and pen for notes

Lexi Brunson, of Burns Saddlery, started as a leather tooler for the company in 2019 and by August of 2021 was made Tooling Foreman. In addition to being the foreman, Lexi is a contributor to Illume magazine and Learn with Illume, an online learning platform for leathercrafters. She is a life-long lover of horses and an avid hunter and fisher.
