If you’ve ever worried about losing a physical pattern — or wondered how to start selling digital versions of your designs — this course bridges that gap.
In From Paper to Pixel: Creating Digital Patterns, Derek Dowsett walks you through the complete process of turning your physical patterns into clean, organized, and printable digital files. Derek doesn’t just teach this — he lives it. As the videographer and digital pattern creator behind Learn with Illume, he’s built the very files used on our own platform.
You’ll start with prepping your patterns properly for digitization because clean digital files begin long before you open software. Derek then demonstrates how to capture a clear, usable photograph, and how to convert that image into a vector file you can edit, scale, and refine without losing quality.
The course includes an introduction to both Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator, and explains the concepts behind the process, so you can use any software you like. You’ll see how to digitize not only buildable patterns, but also artwork for tooling and stitching layouts.
Most importantly, this class removes the intimidation factor from the tech side of pattern making. Derek breaks it down in a way that makes digital tools feel practical, not overwhelming.
Whether you want a secure backup of your shop patterns or you’re preparing to offer digital downloads of your own work, this is a skill set that belongs in the modern leather shop.
About Your Instructor
Derek comes from a family of craftsmen but took a different path, focused on storytelling. Over two decades, Derek has built a career around digital media, with much of his work focused on documenting the stories of the Rural America. This class grew out of the solutions created by the Illume team for creating digital patterns for their courses. Many makers have valuable paper patterns that are difficult to edit, organize, and reproduce. In this class you will learn a practical approach for transforming your paper patterns into accurate, editable digital files that are easier to archive, modify, and share.
