Tooling a Feather Off the Leather With Brandon Corral

Award-winning leather artist Brandon “Swift” Corral is known for dramatic depth, realism, and sculptural tooling effects that appear to push beyond the surface of the leather itself. In this full-day class, students will learn the techniques Swift uses to create bold dimension, sharp detail, and convincing lift within their tooling. The class will cover a wide range of depth techniques including beveling strategies, shadow creation, edge treatment, texture layering, and methods for creating the illusion of separation from the leather surface. Students will finish the day with a detailed feather carving designed to look as though it is lifting directly off the leather. This class is technique-heavy and ideal for leatherworkers looking to push their tooling beyond flat carving and into more dynamic, eye-catching work.

Students will learn advanced tooling and depth techniques used to create dramatic lift, realism, and dimension in leather while completing a feather carving designed to appear as though it is lifting off the leather surface.

Don't de discouraged if you don't have everything. You'll see why in the class: tooling surface (granite slab), mallet, swivel knife, favorite smooth bevelers, modeling spoon, smooth pear shader and/or ballpoint modeling tools, favorite textured backgrounders.
