Youth Chap Workshop With Mackenzie Crable

Whether your goal is to make chaps, learn leatherworking, or build the skills to create your own western accessories, this class is designed to give you a strong foundation you’ll use for years to come.

Come learn the fundamentals of traditional chap making in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop! Whether you’re new to leatherworking or looking to expand your skills, this class will teach you techniques you can use on countless future projects.

Each student will receive a reusable youth chap pattern to take home. This versatile pattern can be modified and adapted into many other leatherworking projects, including chap purses, Christmas stockings, and other western-inspired designs.

By the end of the class, you’ll leave with a completed pair of youth chaps, a reusable pattern, and the confidence to continue creating on your own.

What you Will Learn: 

• Basic chap construction from start to finish
• How to install a chap pocket
• How to design and draw your own yokes
• Measuring and cutting fringe
• Leather layout and cutting techniques
• Assembly and finishing methods
• Hardware installation
• Tips for adding embellishments and creating your own unique style
  

What to Bring:

• Rotary cutter
•  Straight edge – a ruler or leather centering ruler works best
• Self-healing cutting mat (available at craft stores) 
•  Sharp scissors
• Pen and pencil
• Notepad for notes
• Eraser 

If you have a specific style of hardware you’d like to use, please bring it with you. 5/8” buckles and slotted conchos work best for this project.

If you prefer a particular buckle finish, concho design, or decorative hardware, bringing your own is encouraged so you can personalize your finished pair of chaps.

All leather, Pendleton wool, fringe, zippers, and other materials will be provided in class.

Mackenzie is the owner of Arrow M Saddlery with over 10 years of leatherworking experience. She specializes in custom western pieces and loves teaching beginners how to confidently create heirloom-quality leather goods.
